Laser Cleaning Market Growing at a CAGR of 14.61% from 2024-2029

Laser cleaning technology is an advanced industrial technology that utilizes the interaction between laser and matter to achieve material surface cleaning. Currently, with the advantages of no contact, no consumables, no pollution, high precision, no damage or little damage, laser cleaning has been widely used in the lithium battery manufacturing process in the electrode coating, parts decontamination, and rust removal, tire cleaning and other scenarios, and shows a promising market growth prospects.

A report from market research firm Mordor Intelligence shows that the global laser cleaning market size is expected to be USD 780 million in 2024 and will reach USD 1.53 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.61% during 2024-2029.

Drivers of the Laser Cleaning Market

Laser cleaning has become an important means of cleaning and is widely used in the manufacturing sector. With the rise of refined production, laser cleaning hardware technology has undergone several upgrades.

Automated cleaning processes are often used to prepare clean surfaces for subsequent industrial processes and hence need to follow the changes brought about by Industry 4.0. In addition, abrasive blasting systems generate large amounts of waste and damage fragile surfaces, and the use of chemical solvents creates potentially dangerous vapors and liquid waste. These issues have contributed to the popularity of laser-based surface cleaning solutions.

In addition, laser cleaning offers significant advantages over these traditional cleaning methods, including high precision, no contact, less damage to the substrate, no consumables, and more environmentally friendly. These core advantages at the technical level are also driving laser cleaning to gradually replace traditional cleaning methods.

Demand for laser cleaning in the automotive industry has grown dramatically

Laser cleaning removes all contaminants, not just those that are visible. In the automotive industry, laser cleaning is used to remove corrosion, remove coatings, remove topcoats, and for oxide treatments in automotive production or maintenance.

Laser cleaning can restore a high-value vehicle with all of its original components and ensure that it is in good surface condition. According to Adapt Laser Systems, automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, and Michelin have been associated with the company in developing laser technologies, including laser cleaning.

In addition, significant growth in demand for electric vehicles and actual deployment of laser cleaning equipment is driving the growth of the laser cleaning market. Laser cleaning absorbs and eliminates impurities by firing thousands of laser pulses per second. This is beneficial for automotive parts that require bonding and pre-welding processes, improving the chemistry that holds a battery or electric vehicle component together by removing contaminants prior to bonding or welding and extending product life. Coating removal, injection mold processing, post-weld processing, and tire mold cleaning are all scenarios where laser cleaning technology is used in the automotive manufacturing chain.

For example, using lasers to clean battery components enables manufacturers to work quickly and safely while keeping material removal from the ablation process to a level of 1 to 3 μm. This makes it easier to keep the substrate layer intact, which produces far superior connections to uncleaned areas and significantly improves bond stability over time and mileage. Laser ablation is an advanced EV battery cleaning method that improves the electrical conductivity between the cells and bonding wires. EV battery cleaning is typically performed using a typical pulsed fiber laser.

Growing production of electric vehicles is expected to further drive the laser cleaning market. In February 2022, Tesla plans to build its second electric vehicle factory in China to help it meet the growing demand from the local and export markets in the country. In the short term, Tesla plans to increase its production capacity in China to at least 1 million units per year and build a second factory near its existing one in the Shanghai Lingang Free Trade Zone.

In addition, Toyota Group also revealed in May 2022 that it plans to invest INR48 billion ($624 million) in India for the production of electric vehicle components.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), by 2022, there will be around 25.9 million electric vehicles in operation globally.

Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing market

China is placing more emphasis on environmental protection and people are becoming more conscious about protecting themselves from pollution. The demand for laser cleaning solutions is beginning to grow due to the many pollution problems associated with traditional cleaning methods.

In addition, with the implementation of the national strategy Industry 4.0 and Made in China 2025, the level of manufacturing processing in China is on the rise, and laser, as an important supporting technology for modern manufacturing, is expected to have more and more application scenarios for laser cleaning technology.

In Korea, on the other hand, due to the huge demand in the automotive market, laser cleaners are needed to ensure the highest possible pre-weld and post-weld treatments, resulting in ever-growing and strong joints that do not need to go through any coating process. According to the Korea Imported Vehicle Association (KAIDA), about 851,000 gasoline vehicles were sold in South Korea in 2022, followed by diesel vehicles, with hybrids in third place; however, sales of electric or hybrid vehicles increased significantly from the previous year. In February 2022, South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI began cleaning square battery canisters with laser equipment.

Other Asia-Pacific countries such as Japan, India, Australia, Thailand, and Indonesia are expected to witness a relatively significant growth in the demand for laser cleaning technology over the forecast period.

Key Players in the Laser Cleaning Market

The potential growth prospects of the laser cleaning market are attracting a number of vendors to quietly enter this field with a view to gaining a foothold in the market through their product solutions and services.

Companies such as Trafigura, IPG Photonics, Jinan Xintian Technology (XT Laser), Laser Photonics Corporation, Adapt Laser Systems, and Laserax are among the key players in the laser cleaning market. For example, Laser Photonics has introduced the CleanTech 3000-CTH handheld laser cleaning device, which removes the most challenging corrosion and improves adhesion before painting, and IPG Photonics is upgrading its laser cleaning portfolio with the introduction of the LightWELDXR handheld laser welding and cleaning product, which is designed to improve adhesion by means of a smaller spot size and providing a higher level of adhesion. smaller spot sizes and higher energy densities to enable a broader range of handheld laser welding and cleaning capabilities that can handle a wider range of materials and thicknesses.
